The Park Today The present day Castle Park is one of the few open green spaces in the city centre, a haven for people and wildlife and a 'green lung' at the heart of Bristol. While the open spaces, plants and wildlife are for many the main attraction, there are plenty of other permanent features that invite people to discover all areas of the park. Up Coming Events Bristol Morris Men Dance Tuesday 1st May - Mayday dancing at sunrise in Castle Park followed by a day's dancing other locations around Bristol. Olympic Torch Relay 22nd May 2012 - Flame travelling through Castle Park via the riverside walkway/cycle path Queen's Jubilee Celebrations June 2012 - 60th Jubilee celebrations with music and food. Bristol Harbour Festival 20th-22nd July 2012 Updated 31/03/2012 Previous Events Armistice Day Silence 11am 11th November - The Normandy Veterans Association and members with the public stand for two minutes of silence. A wreath is then laid at the memorial plaques and trees marking the invasion beaches of D-day. Bristol Cycle Festival 2011 17th to 25th September - Carninvelo cycle parade through the city. Redbull street trials. Bristol Harbour Festival 29-31 July 2011 - Circus, acrobatics, dance. Twinning Zone with food and information about Bristol's twin cities. Children's Play Area, crafts, play equipment, circus and puppet shows. Bristol Gay Pride Celebration and music Wow! Gorillas - July 4th continuing for ten weeks. No.21 'The Forest Within' - Temporary artwork celebrating 175 years of Bristol Zoo. Points of Interest The Park as a Whole, the Urban Forest, the 'Mound' and Grass Amphithere are home to numerous species of trees, plants and animals. Bristol Castle the structure that gave the park its name has most likely existed in one shape of another since the 11th century until the majority of it was destroyed under Cromwell in the 17th century. Partially excavated remains of the castle keep, walls, and vaults can still be seen in the park today. St Peters Church and St Mary-le-Port the ruins of which stand in the park as a reminder of the bombing raids of WWII. A memorial plaque to the 1,300 people who died in Bristol during the Blitz is situated on the east wall of St Peter's church. Memorials and Peace Park which there are seven Silver Birch trees and plaques in memory of the seven beaches of the D-Day landings. The Herb Garden is a sensory / herb garden next to St Peter's Church and lime trees. The trees are managed by Bristol's D-Day veterans. Public Art Castle Park Project (1991/1993) was one of the first and largest public landscape and art commissioning projects in the south west. There were numerous commissions from artists and craftspeople as part of the city centre park refurbishment. Artworks include railings by Alan Evans, Jim Horrobin and Matthew Fedden, seating by Alan Tilbury, Alan Peters and Illingworth & Partridge, sculptures by Peter Randall Page and Ann Christopher, banners by Tony Eastman, Vizability and Sue Ridge, waste baskets by Dail Behannah, bridge by James McCullough, play area designed by Andy Frost, ceramic floor by Vic Moreton, fountain by Kate Malone and carved lettering by Sarah More, with poetry by Denis Casling. Castle Play Park constructed in the early 90s and contains large wooden turreted climbing frames and sand pit for children to play The Bristol to Bath Cycle Path runs through the park next to the floating harbour.
